Old Town, Wawel Castle, Kazimierz
Cracow’s Old Town, entered on the UNESCO list in 1978 as one of the first 12 sites in the world.
The Old Town today is a part of modern Cracow, where the greatest works of culture and art from the thousand years of the history of this place are collected: 331 historic tenement houses and 2 million moving works of art. Cracow is primarily Wawel – the former seat of Polish kings. Well-preserved fragments of the city walls from the 14th century, the Jewish district of Kazimierz with historic synagogues and a cemetery, and the annual song festival “Shalom na Szerokiej”. UNESCO also appreciated the Jagiellonian University from 1364 as the second university in Europe as well as the most famous Gothic cathedral in Poland, i.e. St. Mary’s Church with the altar of Veit Stoss and the graves of Polish rulers. Cracow is also a huge market square with the Cloth Hall, the Barbican, a green belt, which was built on the site of the former defensive moat, i.e. Planty, and the world-famous Cracow carriages, florists and the world’s most delicious „obwarzanki”.
But Cracow is not only about historical buildings. First of all, Cracow is made of people. We have a huge number of students, because there are many universities. Cracow is a very active city, in the center there are over 800 pubs and restaurant; concerts are organized – from film festivals to soup festivals – not forgetting the spectacular Grand Parade of …. Dragons (!). You have to feel this atmosphere yourself!.
